7 Gallon Bowfront Reef

 

This aquarium was sold in mid-September, 2003
when our H. whitei seahorses began breeding.


The 7 gallon nano after yet another rearrangement.

This yellow clown goby was the first fish added to the 7 gal nano
after the rebuilding process began in May 2003.

Equipment:
Tank:
  • All-Glass 7 gallon glass with black acrylic base and canopy
  • one Tronic 50 watt heater placed in the filter's media chamber
Filtration:
  • one AquaClear Mini with flow rate at high
  • media holder removed and one full and one quarter Mini foams have been placed in the media chamber to facilitate heater
Tank Lighting:
  • 32 watt Smartlamp powercompact with one side ultra-actinic, the other side 10,000k premium daylight
Quarantine Tank:
  • no quarantine tank
Water Storage:
  • RO water is stored, aerated and heated in a five gallon bucket for use with all our reefs

 

Maintenance:
Daily:
  • add top up water
  • make sure temperature is 72-76 degrees F.
  • make sure power filters, lights and heaters are working
Weekly: Perform all of the above, plus:
  • 1 gallon water change
  • lightly turkey baste substrate and rock to get debris into water column and into filter media
  • clean filter foam in outgoing change water and replace any foam that has deteriorated
  • break down and clean AquaClear Mini filtration system
  • clean glass inside and out
  • clean cover on light
  • clean tank hood and base

 

Livestock:
Corals:
  • one colony of green star polyps
  • one yellow toadstool that had been taken from the 42 gal hex
  • one bubble coral, originally in the 7 gal, but had spent time in the 42 gal while the tank was being rebuilt over April and May 2003.
Fish:
  • one yellow clown goby
  • one bi-coloured blennie
Hitchhikers:
  • numerous bristleworms
  • two types of flatworms
Macroalgae:
  • small leafed halimeda
Mobile and Sessile Invertebrates:
  • three astrea snails
  • about four nassarius snails
  • one peppermint shrimp
Rock and Sandbed:
  • about 6 lbs of mixed Jakarta and Fiji live rock
  • 20 lbs of Carib Sea Araga Live sand

 

Troubleshooting:
 
  • had success killing aptasia by using CLR with Q-tips, tweezers and paring knife.  Rinsed rock with a large quantity of RO water after treatment.
