Polly Polestar loves to skate!  She has already mastered several jumps and dreams about competing in the Winter Olympics when she grows up.  One day she was packing her skates for a day at the rink when her cousin, Oscar Marmalade, showed up with a pair of skis.

"Hey, Polly, how about doing something different today?" he asked enthusiastically.  "I am going to the Diamond Hill nearby to try out my new skis.  Want to come along?"

"you know I don't ski, Oscar," replied Polly.  "I am afraid of going downhill so fast!  What if I fall and can't get up?"

"Please, Polly, let's go!" chimed in Polly's little sister Holly.  "I want to ride downhill in my pink sleigh.  I promise to be careful!"

"I can't resist you both," Polly finally gave in.  "But, I will not ski!  And I am taking my skates anyway.  Maybe I can skate on the lake nearby."

As soon as the three friends reached the Diamond Hill, little Holly climbed onto the sleigh.

"I am ready now!" she said, looking excited.  "Could you just five a nice little push to my sleigh?" Polly gently pushed the pink sleigh and watched her little sister slide down the hill.  When the sleigh finally stopped, Holly waver her hand.

"can you pull me up the hill?" she asked.  The ride was so much fin I can't wait to have another one!"

"I'll help you, " said Oscar.  He carefully went down the hill on his skis and then started back up, pulling the pink sleigh with Holly behind him.

"Are you sure you do not even want to try?" Oscar asked Polly when he and Holly reached the top.  "You can use my skis - we are almost the same size."

"Come on, Polly, you can do it!" Holly said cheerfully.

"all right, I'll try once.  I just hope I do not fall right away!"

Oscar explained the basics of skiing as he as helping Polly put on the skis.  When she was finally ready, he counted one-two-three- and .... down the hill she went, first very carefully, then faster and faster.  Just minutes later Polly was waving him from the base of the slope.  She look thrilled!

"That was so much fun!" she was telling everyone at the dinner table later that night.  "At first I was so scared that I wanted to shut my eyes, but I remembered what Oscar had told me and kept going.  I was at the bottom of the hill before I knew it!"

"We are so proud of you, Polly," said her mom.  "I always knew that my little girl has lots of courage!"

Polly continued to skate almost every day and was getting really good at it, but skiing became her big hobby as well.  She even asked her parents to give her new skis for Christmas!
