First Pass at Setting Up the Village
photos taken
June 6, 2008

Some of my collection that
has been stored
in the unused half bathroom next to my studio in the
basement.
The bathroom was thoroughly cleaned prior
to storing the collection to reduce the "yuck!" factor.
To keep dust off this part of my collection,
the heat register and the door had been closed during
storage.

The large buildings have been
stored under the basement stairs
under sheets and old quilts.

I removed the covers carefully
so as little sanding, and everyday dust, as possible was
disturbed.
The covers went directly into the washer to remove
I also vacuumed the floor, all boxes, paint cans
and other miscellaneous items to lower dust levels. |

►A half hour here, an hour there, and soon most of my
buildings were set into their first positions. They
were set up the way I'd been envisioning them since I'd
stored all the buildings.But once
the buildings were on the display table, I realized that the
Village was too crowded. Each building was so close to
the next one that I was having trouble accepting that this
was how my Village should look.
To find a better plan for the display, over the next few
days I'm going to:
- get shelves for some of
the storage cabinets below the display table and store
as many buildings and accessories as possible to see if
I can create a Village that has more open spaces
- look at how to place a variety of buildings on the
display table to determine how and where my road will be
built
- I might also add furniture to the houses that are
not yet furnished, though
this is a time consuming task since I'll be sticking
down each item in each house with either white or blue
sticky tack
Even with the setback of having too much stuff to display
it all at one time, I'm so glad that I had the chance at
this early stage of development to bring out my buildings. I
think the earlier in the process that I find out the
shortcomings of what I initially had in mind, the easier it
will be to come up with alternative plans. I'll also have
time to test some of the plans such as making the road, and
making moveable smaller trees, shrubs, flower beds, etc.
All in all, I very happy with the Village so far, even if
it hasn't quite lived up to my dreams.
